About the project
Solvay and Veolia are collaborating on “Dombasle Énergie,” an innovative industrial energy transition project designed to replace coal with refuse-derived fuel (RDF) at the Dombasle-sur-Meurthe plant. This initiative will help improve the plant’s competitiveness and achieve a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions.
The project involves replacing three coal-fired boilers with a modern boiler facility that includes two furnaces powered by RDF. Produced from non-recyclable waste, RDF will enable the plant to cut its carbon footprint in half and end the import of 200,000 tons of coal each year. Starting in 2024, the Dombasle-sur-Meurthe site will operate a cogeneration unit using 350,000 tons of RDF annually, supplied by Veolia.
Developed by Solvay and managed by Veolia, the new facility will provide 181 megawatts (MW) of thermal power and 17.5 MW of electrical power, which will be integrated into the plant’s industrial processes. With an investment of €225 million, the facility is slated to be operational by 2024. As a pioneering project in France, Dombasle Énergie will foster a sustainable circular economy, aiming to:
- Cut the site’s CO2 emissions by about 50%, equivalent to 240,000 tons per year.
- Phase out fossil fuels by replacing imported coal with RDF produced domestically, primarily from the Grand Est region and neighboring areas.
- Offer a sustainable solution for non-recyclable waste, converting it into renewable energy.
- Reduce water consumption by 7%.
Core metal’s scope of work
Follow up fabrication activities at various suppliers, subcontractors, and on-site. Review material, calibration equipment for welding machines, and operator (NDT, Welders) certificates. Tracking of material supply and verification of material traceability, adherence to and documentation of ITP inspection steps, compliance of manufacturing with drawings, dimensional checks (comparing report conformity to drawings), compilation of final documentation, and actual progress compliance with the contractual.
Supervising the fabrication and ensuring activities are performed according to ITP (Inspection and test plan), ensuring smooth execution of activities, and monitor checklists for materials, equipment, and traceability in collaboration with the quality team.
